When I photograph kids, I try my best to capture their natural personalities. I have never enjoyed formality in anything, much less what you would call formal family portraiture. The stiff posed shots, everyone uncomfortable, then add to that trying to wrangle a small child at the same time. I much prefer realism in these types of photos verses the stiff Sears studio portrait or way overdone baby in a pea-pod type of shots.
That said, its important then to get little ones to warm up to you and not afraid to be themselves. When you have a willing participant like this little lady, it makes it all the more fun! Rain threatened, but held off, and we went to Everhart Park in downtown West Chester, Pa and was able to grab some great shots of her.
